Avenue Q
Husb and I have just been to the Liverpool Empire to see the brilliant adult-themed puppet show, Avenue Q. We knew this show had had rave reviews and it was currently the 6th most popular show in the West End in terms of ticket sales so were looking forward to it. It was fab. Fresh, original and so politically incorrect! And often hilarious. (Laugh out loud Husb)(!)
The musical is set in a rundown street in New York where a colourful group of characters live... Trekkie Monster, Kate Monster, Princeton with his B.A. in English (What DO you do with a B.A. in English??) Rod and Nicky, Brian and his wife Christmas Eve and even the Bad Idea Bears... little voices inside our heads that are also played by puppets. They were all naughty, saucy, cheeky and fun... credit to the cast (who seemed to having SOOOO much fun on stage)
The writers Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez said "Every problem in adult life can be turned into a funny mock educational song" so they proceeded to write witty, catchy tunes to address racism, porn, even coming out of the closet... we loved it, and by the end of the show we almost weren't watching the puppet handlers any more but just watching the puppets.
Highly recommended! (It has won 3 Tony Awards... well deserved)
