Colon, Panama Dec 2019 Gamboa Park

Can you believe we went on this?
Can you believe it was The Husb's idea?!

IT WAS SUCH A GOOD DAY.
💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

The bus ride to GAMBOA PARK was LUSH.
There's no other word for it.
We've never seen vegetation like it.
Trees,trees,trees,trees ... everywhere trees.
It's against the law to chop trees down in Panama, even on your own property.
You need a tree felling permit to fell a tree that is in the way or even if it is old and dying.... our guide was fined for chopping one down on her land without one.

Consequently, and with an annual 9 months of rainfall, there are trees everywhere and there must be 160 shades of green(!) (we can believe that!) ....I think we saw all of them on the journey there, the vegetation was just lush and vibrant and lovely.

We arrived at the Gamboa rainforest resort on the edge of the Soberania National Park overlooking the Chagres river which flows into both the Caribbean and Pacific seas.

And got into our baskets!!!
IT WAS SO EXCITING!!

We were provided with walkietalkie commentary.

It was SO ACE. We weren't expecting animals and birds to be waiting for us.
We were happy just to ride among the treetops and take in the jungle canopy, views of Gatun Lake, the Panama canal and surrounding mountains.
It was just lovely.

At the end of the one kilometre ride we exited the basket to go up about 9 sets of stairs to the viewing platform.

And then...
AND THEN....

AND THEN....

just as we were about to get back in the basket for the descent...

WE SAW HIM!!!

A SLOTH!
My day was complete.💚

He was all snuggled up and wedged in the tree.

After this, and still beaming from ear to ear, we had a chance to visit the frog, orchid, butterfly and  sloth sanctuaries.

The frogs were MINISCULE.
As small as a finger nail.

A crazy orchid.

A butterfly disguising itself as an owl.

Butterflies disguising themselves as rabbits.

Butterflies at it.

Butterfly eggs.

Exotic butterfly.

The sloth sanctuary.

Oh the absolute cuteness of a sloth.
Obviously it's not the same as seeing them in the wild but close up, their little cheeky faces are so cute and what was quite amusing was our excitement when one of them actually MOVED.

Well I was just glowing.
A sloth in the wild.
Rescued sloths in the sanctuary.

I was still beaming when we had our cocktail in the swanky hotel en route back to the ship.

A return journey through all that lush green vegetation...

and an hour in a Panama supermarket to buy pineapple jam and coffee.

WHO SAID PANAMA WAS JUST A CANAL?

And an eye that was getting better.
