P+O Ventura to the Caribbean, Nov 2014

"Let's have some winter sun", said Husb.

Well we definitely weren't expecting THIS when we arrived in Barbados.

Rain like you've never seen before. Bouncing.

And to think I very nearly didn't bother packing Pixen's old cagoule.

We had left a grim, grey Manchester, at the end of November, for 2 weeks in the Caribbean...

(Wooo- we flew on a Thomson Dreamliner-a whizzy plane that can fly at speeds of 640mph - that's 3 times faster than a F1 car at full throttle apparently)

...and we were expecting SUN, not torrential rain.

Needless to say, 3 beach trips had been cancelled.

We were too soaked to walk to the Kensington Oval cricket ground, (we saw the floodlights, that was good enough) but did see a bit of Bridgetown on the way back to the ship.

Of course Zesty came too.

I look half asleep here. Oh yes, I was a bit jetlagged.

The old and the new! A clipper cruise ship alongside P+O VENTURA.

We soon dried out. Maybe tomorrow would be better?

The next day, a day at sea,  could not have been more different.
 Oh my days the HEAT!
Barbados is the most easterly island of the West Indies.
On our way to St Vincent we had moved across into the chain of Leeward and Windward islands ...

and this was obviously where the sun was.

It was so bright.

And it was so hot.
But not too hot for a walk round to the sun deck on the bridge...

and a plank. Always look for an opportunity to do a plank.

Eh up. High heels and a red face. Oooops.
That was my own fault for delaying going to the gym because it was so nice on deck.
I only had ten minutes to shower and change.

It was dressyuppy time for Captain's Cocktails.

We schnaffled 6 gin and tonics each and felt perfectly fine ...they didn't taste very ginny though.

Heel kicks with the Captain. He doesn't look too amused but I loved it.

ST VINCENT

A lush island ..."Plant a pencil and it will grow in St Vincent" they say.

We had a nice musical steel pan welcome but didn't do much more than walk down the main street where locals were selling enormous avocados alongside washing powder, screws and nails, and all sorts of tiles.

A new moon..

and a lovely sunset.

Goodness Ali you do get around!

Love the photos of the West Indies and you certainly looked as if you had a good time.

I enjoy armchair travelling with your blog.

You should come to Australia sometime, though don't ask me to participate, I couldn't keep up.

Ah Anne you are so kind! Yes, Husb has just retired so we were able to go abroad during school term time which is so much cheaper, and we loved having sun while the UK was wet and cold!
We would love to come to Australia, although the thought of that flight is a bit alarming, we aren't keen flyers and we think we have done well to get across to the WIndies!
Next stop...San Francisco to visit our son (13 hour flight-eeeek)
