THORPE PERROW ARBORETUM ...with CUB! 26/5/19

We had a flying visit from the Cubster before Emily started her new job. The trouble was, it was the Edinburgh Marathon that weekend and the train up was PACKED, he had to stand all the way as there wasn't even a seat on the floor. Gulp. Don't worry, the #JollyHollies were worth it :)

He stayed with the Bellsters and we stayed 20 mins away in a pub.

Awwww. Our boy came home.

He didn't waste any time babysitting Sophski.

South Park is round the corner so off we went.

And then the fun started.

Little Tinks threw the ball into the lake.

Miraculously. Yanski stayed dry and didn't fall in and with a few bodges of a cricket bat, we got it back.

This is the history of this lovely 100 acres park, which is home to 5 National Plant Collections and 67 Champion Trees.

Sir Robert Ropner (1838 – 1924) emigrated to England from Germany in 1857 and founded the well known fleet of merchant ships that carried the family House Flag for over 100 years. Thorp Perrow Estate was purchased by his son, Sir William in 1927. Born in 1864, he was the third eldest of ten children.
Colonel Sir Leonard Ropner, was 32 years old when the Estate was bought and it was very soon afterwards that the planning and planting of the Arboretum began. It is not clear where this great love for trees came from – it was his son, Sir John’s joke that he should have collected French impressionist pictures but no such luck!
One of the nicest things about Thorp Perrow Arboretum is its slightly ‘amateurish’ atmosphere. It was after all designed and cared for by a man with no previous arboricultural experience – and this still remains the case today!

The fairy trail was cute.

Cubster pushed a buggy of bags and coats :)

...and after seeing Kanga and Roo in Wallaby Wood and the meerkats on Meerkat Island we had a flying display by the birds of prey, getting sooooo close to the owls and all the while hearing the parrot chattering away behind us.

LOL

Naturally there was TEA.
Cub was back in England so there HAD to be TEA.

Naturally there was a PLANK.
We were re-united so there HAD to be a PLANK.

...and naturally the kite went straight up into the tree WITHIN SECONDS of its launch.

AAAAARRRRGGGHHHHH you coudn't make it up.
Straight up into the air and directly into the tree.

Naturally (after about 4 hours of armache and tree wrestling!!)(LOL) we got it down!!
Wotahoot!

Holding back the tears we had a final hug.
He got a seat on the train and next day was on his way back to San Francisco.
Such a fun weekend with precious memories.
