Graffiti Cauliflower
Wooooooo!! Look what we had for tea!!!
Purple Cauliflower! It was "Produce from Cornwall" so it was worth a try.

Somehow it didnt look quite right on the plate so I hurriedly added some green in the form of cucumber....

Oh dear Husb. I personally didn`t think it was any DIFFERENT from normal cauli but I suppose you eat with your eyes...do you?

Cartmel Races Aug Bank Hol
In our quest to visit all the racecourses in the country , we chose Cartmel in the Lake District on Bank Holiday Monday. Unfortunately, while the rest of the country was bathed in sunshine and
Cub
and Sooze frazzled at Hampton Court Palace, WE GOT SOAKED. However the appalling weather didn`t deter the crowds, it was packed... so much so that we couldn`t see very much, especially with the multitude of umbrellas.
It was a pretty little course with a stream running through the middle of it and my brand new welly boots were fab in all the mud,but I can`t see us hurrying back there (although the FAMOUS CARTMEL STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING was AMAZING)
Cartmel only stages National Hunt (jump) racing.
The course is a sharp and narrow left handed oval. The difference from other courses is the home straight which unusually veers off and dissects the main oval. The main circuit measures just over one mile and one furlong and what is also unique to Cartmel is that the run-in (the distance from the last fence to the finish line) is known as the longest in the country at just over 4 furlongs.
We managed to get a couple of winners which is always a buzz.

VIGO, north Spain
There were loads of these brightly painted pigs to greet us when we arrived in Vigo.

We really wanted to visit Santiago de Compostela, the world`s third most important city for Christian pilgrimage (especially as I have already been to Jerusalem and to Rome,) but it was JUST too far from Vigo.So we headed up the hill, window shopping on the way, up to Castro Park where the views of the city are superb.

When we got back to the boat and looked back, we realised how high we`d climbed. In fact, I said to Husb "If you had pointed to that hill and said "shall we climb up there...?" (I was IN FLIPFLOPS)we probably wouldn`t have bothered but it was well worth it.
Plenty of bag shops to go into and spend our money (!!) on the way up and down. I got my bags from a proper shop but there were loads of bags on the pavement like these.

LISBON
The first time we went to Lisbon, in 1980, we nearly missed the train back to the Algarve. This time, 29 years later we nearly missed the boat! Lisbon`s Metro only has 4 lines but they managed to confuse us.

Getting to the Vasco da Gama complex on the Metro was fine and we had a lovely hour in the Oceanarium where we saw...

sea otters!!

PUFFINS!!
and the most enormous elephant fish I`ve ever seen, it was a brilliant place, very impressive.

Then I got the Husb IN A CABLE CAR WUTWOOOO!! which took us along the bay and included an opportunity for viewing/taking photos in the middle. (That`s what I told the Husb... I personally thought it was a power cut OMG OMG and we were definitely swaying...oooooeeeerrr...

We managed a look round the Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) exhibition. His early work was dedicated mainly to self portraits, but later he became almost obsessed with his depiction of flowers. Husb was impressed with his paintings of people`s expressions, particularly people who looked "miles away" and as if they were uncomfortable and wishing they were somewhere else.

...and then we had to try and find our shuttle bus back to the boat!

GIBRALTAR
After stomping around Malaga, Barcelona, Florence and Rome, and after all the strenuous sand sculpting in Cannes, we had a day at sea. A LIE-IN!!! I can`t remember anything we did because basically we did nothing, it was so warm and sunny we didn`t need entertaining.
Next stop was Gibraltar and what a welcome! Dolphins galore were waiting for the boat. They obviously recognise a cruise ship.. there were loads of them swimming alongside. Brilliant!
Anyway it IS an impressive rock.

Very English but with good weather. We didn`t have enough time to queue for the cable car or any desire to see some wild monkeys so we just strolled through the main street(Gibraltar IS only ONE street) where I bought a dress
and we phoned Drake ON HER 20th BIRTHDAY. Then it was up to the Botanical Gardens and back to the ship.

Look how close we were to the gangplank(!) ...roll-on-roll-off!
